Bell's palsy is a neurological disorder that strikes the face. Learn the causes for this malady....

Bell's palsy is caused by injury to the 7th cranial nerve. This can happen in a number of ways, including by infections, trauma to the face, and alcoholism. The list of possible causes of injury include:

External

  • facial injuries (from car accidents, assault, etc.)
  • a traumatic birth
  • carbon monoxide poisoning
  • thalidomide
  • alcoholism
  • lightning
  • skull fracture
  • scuba diving

Internal

  • pregnancy
  • diabetes
  • middle ear infection
  • high blood pressure
  • overactive thyroid
  • after removal of a brain or facial tumor
  • infections: herpes, chicken pox, shingles, lyme disease, encephalitis, mumps, mononucleosis, tuberculosis, malaria, and syphilis
