Bell's palsy has certain symptoms that are specific to this neurological illness. They can last for weeks to many months. Learn about Bell's palsy symptoms....

Bell's palsy exhibits certain symptoms that can distinguish it from other neurological illnesses. One of the main defining symptoms of Bell's palsy is that it is usually unilateral, or one-sided. This neurological disorder also only affects the facial areas, unlike a stroke, which can affect all of one side of the body (limbs and trunk included.) It is possible to contract Bell's palsy more than one time, although many patients are only affected once. Following is a list of general symptoms:

  • facial pain
  • weakened facial muscles
  • ear pain
  • changes in taste
  • trouble with speech
  • inability to close eye or easily blink
  • dry eye or tearing eye
  • droopy smile on affected side
  • paralyzed nostril
  • paralyzed forehead muscles
  • uncontrolled drooling on affected side
  • tight or swollen facial muscles
  • inability to move mouth muscles
