The National Telecommuting Institute, located in the US, hires people with disabilites to fill hundreds of telecommuting jobs set aside for disabled people. The level of disablity can be mild to severe, including those with neurological illnesses, but the main qualification is that prospective employees would benefit from home employment due to their disabilities. NTI is subsidized by local vocational rehabilitation agencies, and employees are given reimbursement for purchased computer equipment, computer connections, long distance phone service, and even some health expenditures.
The majority of the jobs are for call centers that are able to farm work out to remote home computers, via the internet. Employees perform customer service functions, including answering calls from customers, locating information, filling customer orders, and fielding complaints. Some jobs are for government agencies and others are for commercial retail companies. There are even positions available for trained medical transcriptionists.
