Winter is the season for snowmen, hot cocoa, and....the FLU! People with medical conditions, especially compromised immune systems, are particularly at risk. It is important to check with your doctor for his or her opinion on the shot. Some are very for it, while others see it as a source for actually bringing on the flu. Autoimmune disorders can make patients very susceptible to the flu, and cause exacerbations of their conditions. Neurological/ autoimmune illnesses such as multiple sclerosis and lupus that affects the nervous system are two examples of conditions that can worsen if patients catch the flu. The best treatment is prevention, such as getting a flu shot, frequently washing hands, and avoiding those with the flu. It is important to 1st check with your doctor about receiving the flu shot.
