Thanks for the great article, Jen. I wish we had recognized Buddy's symptoms earlier. As it was, getting him on a strict walking regimen, making dietary changes, and adding glucosamine and vitamins, helped keep him mobile longer. Thanks for spreading awareness of this disorder, Elaine.

I hope for the best with your other two dogs, Elaine. My husband and I marvel at the happiness our cat has brought us. If only animals were treated with the immediacy and the money to find cures the way humans are. Honestly, all life is divine.

This was a great article. I have read a lot about this disease in the last week, as my German Shepherd/Husky/SharPei mix just passed away from this after being diagnosed a week ago. The symptoms are subtle, and you don't think twice about it until they become more pronounced. My dog would be running and suddenly fall down on her side immobilized and crying, and a minute later would be up and round. She also began getting pimples all over her body. This is a miserable disease not just isolated to German Shepherds. I am glad she went quickly. My heart goes out to others whose pets have this awful disease.

Thank you for your response. I had never heard of this disorder until my coworker (from Autoimmune Disease) suggested I write about it. Her beloved German shepherd also died from this, and she wanted to get the word out about this terrible condition. I'm sorry for your loss; I know that I love my cat as much as I could love a son.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Gerics

Hi Muggbugg
my dog has a vet appt. today second one in 2 weeks. i think this may be what is wrong with him. did your dog stop holding his tail up? my dog used to hold his tail up like a scorpion and now will barely raise to to go to the bathroom. has been dropping poop on the floor without knowing it. wont/cant jump on the bed. we thought he had arthritis and did respond briefly to rimadyl but now is having more symptoms. thx for any info.

My 13 year old Rottweiler has myelopathy. I give him Glycoflex III and keep him moving as much as possible. He has the hardest time getting up after he's been sleeping all night, and I make sure he's on carpet all the time. His right front leg and left rear leg is effected the most. He's very strong in the front end, so he can still pull himself up. It's wierd, because his 11 year old daughter is fine and still runs, but his sister had it too.
