» Jake_KC - Just want to know

Ok i am a 20 year old college student. Last spring after taking my last final of the day i went home and after about an hour of just relaxing i felt a numbness in my left foot. This numbness slowly worked its way up my entire left side. I lost all feeling and control in just the left side of my body. By the time i got to the hospital, which took about 30 minutes, i had gained motor control in the same order i had lost it. Following this was a painful migraine that lasted three days. The Neurologist said the i lost my feeling because it was a premigrane symptom and i would probably have them the rest of my life. He put me on topamax and at that time i was on lexapro. Well ever since then i have only had two or three instances where i lose feeling again but the numbing feeling returns in my left foot off and on but fades. Well in the past three months or so i have noticed that every so often a sound of drainage comes from the back of my neck. It sounds like fluid is being pushed out of my brain and into my lower extrimities. I just want to know what this could be and if i should worry and see a doc.

Hi Jake---

I can't say that I've heard of this "drainage" sound before. I would suggest you mention it to your doctor. Is it a painful experience? Do you have sinus problems? I have MS, so I get all kinds of bizarre symptoms, but I know that they are from the MS. Definitely tell your doctor, especially since this has happened more than once.

Hi Jake,
I actually had the same thing happen to me and it was also my left side that went completley numb, my moutth dropped and I could feel my leg or arm. The doctors tried telling me it was a complex migraine, but my Neurologist told me it was my medication, Topomax that was doing it to me, too high of a dose. I was taking too much of it and that is one of the side effects. I actually went to the ER and by the time I got there it was gone, but I had the worst Migraine after that and was put on a drip in the ER and for 3 days it was still there. I had actually had the Migraines for 9 1/2 months everyday. It started after the birth of my daughter and continued for a very long time. At the end of it, it was determined that it was cause by over medicating, too much medications in my system. the neurologist put my on a 10 day trial of Prednesone(Steriod) and I had to go complete cold turkey off of every medication I was prescribed. It will almost be a year since that, and I still get migraines but not as often. I am actually going to be going for Botox treatments for this, as my MRI showed no signs of complications. I would seriously do some investigating in that medication, it could be doing more harm then good.
